Life Safety

Life safety control systems are required in most buildings. When a large building is on fi re, the greatest cause of deaths is smoke inhalation. Life safety control systems control the flow of smoke and fire in the building. I n case of fire, the HVAC system fire and smoke dampers automatically shut off where needed. At the same time, the HVAC system creates high air pressure in some parts of the building (such as stair wells) so that these areas remain relatively smoke free.

Performance test, vestibule: Use this procedure:

• Actuate any fire alarm initiating device.
• Open the doors from the vestibule to the stair-shaft, on any three consecutive floors.
• Ensure that the system meets the following requirements:
  • 2500-cfm minimum is flowing at the stair-shaft exhaust opening.
  • The flow from the exhaust of each of three vestibules shall be 2500- cfm minimum per vestibule with all three flowing simultaneously .
